Inspiration is everything in photography. Most photographers didn’t get into photography because we loved sitting behind a computer or because we loved sitting in a darkroom. We got into photography because we saw something that inspired us. Whether that was a National Geographic Magazine article that took us first-hand into some remote part of the world or because we grew up next to our father or grandfather that taught us about the craft, there was something that inspired us.
As a portrait photographer I find it particularly important to find something that balances work with pleasure. After day-in-day-out photographing for clients, it is important to re-ignite our inner passion for photography. I remember as a child looking at the National Geographic Magazine and wondering what it would be like to travel the world and interact with these different cultures that they document. This was the inner fire that drove me to become a photographer.
When I am not photographing a portrait for a client I am working on personal projects. The personal project is what has given me the creative freedom and balance from the everyday portrait. As a traveling Technical Representative for Sigma, I have the unique opportunity to travel and interact with different people around the United States on a regular basis. I have been lucky enough to see almost everything in America that I have wanted to see. My personal project that I am working on is one that I have titled Character Portraits. The character portrait is a portrait that shows who someone truly is. Whether it is a cowboy, a tow truck driver, or a shop owner, I create portraits in their own environment that brings their story out through their eyes.
Find your own personal project and get inspired to create! You can find inspiration a variety of places. I turn to the National Geographic photographers as well as the Magnum Photos Photographers. Depending on what you want to photograph, you can find it. If you ever lose the passion and the drive, then it is time to find a new craft. Inspiration and motivation is the best part of being in this industry. Being passionate, motivated, and inspired is what keeps that fire burning.
